Department Chair Meetings and 2016-2017 SY
I am currently in the process of determining sections for the 2016-2017 SY. In other words, determining teacher needs based on student requests, part year teacher hires, teachers' transfer requests to and from our school and finalizing the 2016-2017 Master schedule with department chairs, department APs and my principal. I am trying to leverage the leadership skills of the department chairs while building their capacity by including them in the process. Interestingly enough, this is the time of the year that some teachers are starting to "become more endearing" towards me hoping to determine early what they will be teaching during the next school year.

Balancing a schedule can be complicating. However, one fact remains true, all decisions should be made in the best interest of students. How will the teacher placements impact student achievement impact student achievement? Its hard trying to make instructional about teachers, while including them in that decision making process. Someone is going to leave from the table upset. My principal always says "you can tell or suggest, but that does not mean that this will be the final decision. At the end of the day, I will consider it, but the final decision will be in the best of the students we serve."
ReplyDeleteOne problem that I encounter with beginning the scheduling process so early is the teacher attrition rate. While some teachers leave during the transfer process we also have teachers accepting positions in other districts. This will go on well in to the summer. That then puts me in a position to either A-change a veteran teachers position over the summer or B- find the exact match for the teacher that is leaving. It gets tricky!
