Major Project Goals
I have had the chance to determine what my major project will be within my school. The project is to implement a school behavior program known as PBIS. There are several different levels to the program including creating a rewards system for the students that are performing the appropriate behaviors. My goal is to have school wide buy in. As it stands, teachers and students are luke-warm about the program but I believe that is because the rewards are not as consistent as they need to be. I am in search of the proper motivational tool to cause teachers to pass out the school cash we have developed which will hopefully result in more students mimicking the correct behavior to earn the cash. So the more cash that is circulated the more behavior should improve. As students earn cash they have the opportunity to purchase several prizes that have been donated by the surrounding community. As the semester continues I'll try to find the right motivational tool for the teachers to completely buy-in.

Phillip,
ReplyDeleteMy major project is implementation of PBIS as well. We kicked off PBIS this year after receiving training last year. I am our school's PBIS coach so alot of what you are saying is resting on my shoulders. We did fascets of PBIS last year so our staff was familiar with the concept. We have TigerTokens that are used like cash. So far our teachers and students have bought into the program. Teachers are seeing a big difference in our students but I am seeing an even bigger difference in our staff. Many teachers are moving from always being negative and focusing on what the students are doing wrong to being positive and focusing more time on the majority of students who are doing it right. The biggest way we recieved buy-in was by actually getting results that helped the teachers. Our PBIS team researched and purchased a Hero K-12 system that has all but eliminated our tardies to class (this was our #1 referral last year). The 2nd thing we did was put a lock down on cell phone use in the classroom. (our #2 referral last year). We locked down and have almost all but eliminated cell phone use by getting buy in from the teachers that we all need to be unified and present a consistant message to our students. We have seen a huge turnaround in both of these major referral items so my PBIS team has alot of street cred right now.
We have instituted PBIS at our school as well and the teachers and students seem to be responding well to it. The only issue is the fact now students expect PBIS points for everything. Our biggest challenge is having the teachers track the PBIS points that have been awarded to students and have them redeemed for an incentive. It is a work in progress for us.
ReplyDeletePhillip, focus on starting small. You may want to start with the 9th graders first. And roll your program out in phases. We have PBIS at my school. WE have tried over the years to implement the program with our upper grades but have not been successful. Now we are on the Academy model for PBLs.
